Meet Kiku.
I never look back.
“Hi! I’m Kiku. My health journey began over 30 years ago with a diagnosis of Wegener’s Granulomatosis – now known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis. This condition is a type of vasculitis, which is a category of blood vessel disorder. As a result, I developed high blood pressure as a young adult and didn’t adhere to my medication schedule.
On my 30th birthday, I learned it was imperative I start dialysis treatment to live. At that time, there was inadequate information about dialysis and kidney disease, and I didn’t understand the different treatment options available. I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful nurse at my nephrologist’s office take the time to educate me on the different methods of treatment.
After 4 years of being on peritoneal and hemodialysis while continuing to work and support myself, I received a cadaver transplant with not one but two kidneys. October 9, 2024, will be my 22-year kidney-versary!
Medically, I’ve been through a lot over the last two decades, but I never look back. I’ve approached my health ups and downs as challenges and somehow navigated my way through. I’m proud to be a part of ReMend. Ironically, I also manage the marketing and communications efforts for Balboa Medical Group family brands, including Balboa Nephrology. It seems as if I’ve come full circle!”
