HOW TO AVOID EATING TOO MUCH SODIUM

Hey there~ Serena here! As you may know, the renal diet can be very strict at times, especially around the holidays. In general, the renal diet tries to limit the consumption of four specific nutrients: sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and water (fluid). As the holidays approach it is important for dialysis patients to be aware of some of the foods to avoid as well as the foods that are safe to enjoy.

How to avoid eating too much sodium:

In general, if it’s made from a box or a can, it probably has too much sodium in it. Find out the foods you like the most, and see if there is a recipe that you can use to make your own from scratch.

Stuffing from a box can have lots of unnecessary sodium. For example, Stove Top Turkey Stuffing Mix contains 390 mg per serving. A serving size to them is only half a cup! I’m not a big fan of stuffing, but it was easy for me to find a recipe just by typing in Google. There are plenty of reputable resources that offer recipes and list nutrition facts so you can keep track of your intake. Here is a baked stuffing recipe I found on Davita: https://bit.ly/3450Otg

Enjoy the Holidays!

Much Love,
Serena
