Welcome, ReMend Mentors

Thank you for being part of the ReMend mentor community. Your willingness to listen, encourage, and share your experience can make a meaningful difference in someone’s kidney journey.

This page is here to support you with training materials, helpful communication tools, educational resources, and ongoing encouragement. Whether you are just getting started or have been mentoring for years, we want you to feel prepared, supported, and connected.

Your ReMend Mentor Coordinator will connect with you each month to offer support, answer questions, and gather updates along the way.

You’re Not Doing This Alone

Mentoring is meaningful work, and it can also come with questions, uncertainty, or moments when you are not quite sure what to say. That is completely normal.

ReMend is here to support you throughout your mentoring journey. Your Mentor Coordinator will check in with you each month to provide guidance, answer questions, and help you feel confident in your role.

If you ever need additional support, have concerns about a mentee, or simply want to talk through a situation, please reach out. We are here to help.

Mentor Toolkit

Being a mentor is not about having all the answers. It is about showing up with empathy, patience, and a willingness to listen.

As a ReMend mentor, it helps to:

  • listen with compassion and without judgment

  • offer encouragement without pressure

  • share your experience honestly and thoughtfully

  • remember that every kidney journey is different

  • know when to refer questions or concerns back to ReMend

Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can offer is simply understanding.

Helpful Communication Tips

Sometimes the hardest part of mentoring is knowing how to begin. These reminders can help.

  • Keep it warm and simple. Introduce yourself, let your mentee know you are reaching out as a ReMend mentor, and give them room to respond in their own time.

  • A hesitant response does not always mean a lack of interest. Your mentee may be overwhelmed, tired, emotional, or unsure of what to say. Patience matters.

  • Your lived experience can be powerful and encouraging. At the same time, try not to assume your path will look like theirs. The goal is to support, not compare.

  • That’s okay. You are not expected to know everything. ReMend is here to help with questions or concerns that go beyond the mentor role.

Be a Kidney Coach

All ReMend mentors are encouraged to take the American Kidney Fund’s Kidney Health Coach program. This online course is a great opportunity to build your kidney health knowledge and strengthen your support skills.

When completing the demographic question, How did you learn about Kidney Health Coach? please select Balboa Health.

A Reminder for the Journey:
You do not have to be perfect to be impactful.
