WHY WE SAY NO TO PROPOSITION 23.
AS A NON-PROFIT ADVOCATE FOR DIALYSIS PATIENTS WE ARE URGING CALIFORNIA TO VOTE NO ON PROP 23.
Proposition 23 would raise costs without delivering a meaningful improvement in the quality of care. The fight over Proposition 23 is between organized labor, which favors the initiative, and a number of medical and other interests that are opposed including; the California Dialysis Council, the California Medical Association, the American Nurses Association of California and medical associations in at least 15 counties.
Surrounding the debate are questions of medical care quality, clinic staffing, access, and costs. Currently, nephrologists make daily rounds at dialysis clinics and each of the dialysis patients typically has access to team of caregivers including a nurse, dialysis technician, a dietician and social worker during their treatment. Dialysis is a means of survival for patients. Increasing costs would lead to a reduction of care and clinic closures – putting dialysis patients severely at risk.
